Living in McKenzie Towne

McKenzie Towne is a master-planned community in southeast Calgary, developed by Carma Developers (now Brookfield Residential). It is bordered by Deerfoot Trail to the west, Stoney Trail to the south, 52 Street SE to the east and the South Trail commercial area along 130 Avenue SE to the north. The community was designed in the neotraditional, New Urbanist style, with original concepts by Andrés Duany, to feel like a small town: traditional architecture, a mix of home types and a street-front shopping area.

Districts and architecture. McKenzie Towne is divided into Inverness, Elgin, Prestwick and the High Street commercial area. Elgin uses six European-inspired styles, including English Cottage, Tudor and Italianate, while Prestwick and Inverness use Queen Anne, Georgian, Craftsman and similar styles. Architectural guidelines shaped how homes look from the street.

High Street and amenities. High Street has street-front shops, restaurants and a Sobeys grocery store. The South Trail Crossing big-box shopping area is along the community’s northern edge. McKenzie Towne Hall, run by the McKenzie Towne Council residents’ association, has a gymnasium and meeting and banquet space, and the community has paved pathways, ponds, a fountain and splash park, an outdoor rink and a skate park. Property owners pay an annual residents’ association fee, which is registered on title. For 2026 the fee is $235, invoiced June 1 and due June 30.

Housing. McKenzie Towne has a broad mix of detached houses, apartment-style condos and townhomes, plus other property types. That range means listings run from entry-level condos to larger detached homes.

Getting around. The McKenzie Towne transit terminal and park-and-ride on 52 Street SE, next to High Street, is served by several bus routes including the 302 BRT. Deerfoot and Stoney Trail border the community. Route 117, the McKenzie Towne Express, also runs from the community to downtown.

Schools. McKenzie Towne School and McKenzie Highlands School (Calgary Board of Education) and St. Albert the Great School (Calgary Catholic) are in the community. School designations change from year to year, so check the CBE and Calgary Catholic school finders for a specific address.

Buying and selling in McKenzie Towne. For condos and townhomes, review condo fees, the reserve fund study and the bylaws. For detached homes, compare age, updates and lot type. When selling, good comparables should match the district and home style, not just square footage.
