Living in McKenzie Lake

McKenzie Lake is an established lake community in southeast Calgary, developed from the mid-1980s onward. It is bordered by 130 Avenue SE to the north, Deerfoot Trail to the east, Stoney Trail to the south and Fish Creek Provincial Park to the west. The community grew as an expansion of the original McKenzie area, and its private lake and island are its best-known features. The area is named after J. McKenzie, one of its first settlers, who arrived from Montreal in 1882, and the land was annexed by the City of Calgary in 1970.

The lake. The McKenzie Lake Residents Association runs a 43-acre lake and an 18-acre park for its members. Members can use rowboats, canoes, kayaks and pedal boats, fish for stocked trout, and use tennis courts, basketball courts, a beach volleyball area and a toboggan hill. In winter the association maintains hockey rinks, a skating pad and a 2.5-kilometre skating path around the lake. Membership is tied to the property: an encumbrance is registered on title, and the annual fee is mandatory. Fees are invoiced in March and due April 1 each year, and the association office is at 16199 McKenzie Lake Way SE.

Housing. Most homes in McKenzie Lake are detached houses, with some townhomes. Homes range from family homes on interior streets to larger homes along the lake and the ridge. Because the community was built over many years, home ages, styles and renovation levels vary a lot from street to street.

Outdoors and getting around. Fish Creek Provincial Park and the Bow River pathways are on the community’s west side. Deerfoot Trail and Stoney Trail border McKenzie Lake, and the South Trail shopping area along 130 Avenue SE is just to the north. Calgary Transit Route 96 runs through McKenzie Lake to Anderson CTrain station on the Red Line.

Schools. McKenzie Lake School and Mountain Park School (Calgary Board of Education) and St. John Henry Newman School (Calgary Catholic, formerly Cardinal Newman) are in the community. School designations change from year to year, so check the CBE and Calgary Catholic school finders for a specific address.

Buying in McKenzie Lake. With homes from several decades, inspection matters: roof, windows, furnace and hot-water tank ages can change the true cost of a home. Check whether a home is lakefront, lake-access or interior, and confirm the residents association encumbrance on title. We can help you compare those details and review the RPR before you firm up.

Selling in McKenzie Lake. With relatively few listings at any one time, pricing depends on finding truly comparable sales by home style, lot and updates.
