Living in Somerset

Somerset is a residential community in southwest Calgary, established in 1995. It is bounded by the CTrain line to the east, James McKevitt Road to the west, Stoney Trail to the south and 162 Avenue SW to the north. Bridlewood is directly to the west and Shawnessy to the north and east, while Silverado lies south across Stoney Trail and the Spruce Meadows equestrian facility is to the southwest.

Getting around. Somerset’s biggest practical draw is transit. Somerset–Bridlewood station, the southern end of the Red Line CTrain, sits on the border between Somerset and Shawnessy, and Shawnessy station is also close by. Calgary Transit bus routes, including Route 14 and Route 52, run through the community. Stoney Trail, on the south edge, gives drivers a fast route around the city.

Amenities. Neighbouring Shawnessy, including Shawnessy Towne Centre, has a large shopping area for day-to-day needs. The Somerset–Bridlewood Community Association serves both communities. The area was planned with open space for school sites, recreation areas and linear parks, and pathways weave through the community. Somerset School, a Calgary Board of Education school, is on Somerset Manor SW. School designations change from year to year, so check the CBE and Calgary Catholic school finders for a specific address.

Housing. Somerset listings are mostly detached houses, along with apartment-style condos and some townhomes. That gives buyers options from condos to detached homes within one community.

Comparing nearby areas. Many buyers looking at Somerset also look at Bridlewood and Shawnessy, which share the same CTrain station and shopping, and at Evergreen to the northwest. Comparing them side by side, on home type, age, lot and condo fees, is often the quickest way to see where your budget goes furthest.

Buying in Somerset. For condos, review condo fees, the reserve fund study and the bylaws, and ask how close the unit is to the station and Stoney Trail if noise matters to you. For detached homes, compare age, updates and lot. We can help you check the title and RPR before you firm up.

Selling in Somerset. Transit access is a real selling point, and good comparables should match home type and location within the community.
