Living in Chestermere
Where it is. Chestermere is a city on Chestermere Lake, just east of Calgary’s city limits and about 16 km from Calgary City Hall in a straight line, along Highway 1A and the Trans-Canada Highway.
History. The lake is a reservoir built in the early 1900s to store Bow River water for irrigation; the Western Irrigation District still manages its water level. Cabin owners formed the Summer Village of Chestermere Lake in 1977. It became a town in 1993 and a city on January 1, 2015.
Growth. The population grew 11.4% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses, from 19,887 to 22,163. Households are large: 3.3 people on average, against 2.6 for Alberta.
Homes. In 2021, 80% of homes were single-detached, 8% semi-detached and 9% row houses; only 3% were apartments. 91% of households owned their home.
Amenities. The lake is the centre of town life, with beaches, boating and fishing in summer. The lake level is lowered in the fall and raised again in the spring.
Schools. Chestermere is served by Rocky View Schools (public, including Chestermere High School) and the Calgary Catholic School District.
